SUNY New Paltz: Art Direction
I was responsible for organizing and setting up this photo shoot in conjunction with Steve Jordan, a professional photographer who lives in New Paltz and is widely known for his amazing landscape photography. This award-winning shot was taken from a bucket truck that was positioned to get the maximum amount of golden, evening light before sunset.
I have also had the great pleasure of art directing Matthew Lester on five different occasions, capturing the life of SUNY New Paltz students and their environment on campus.
Over the years, I’ve also taken some photos of the campus.
An amateur’s offerings
The Great Salt Lake, Utah. I visited a large lake as a child, a much smaller lake beyond the horizon here, and unless something drastic is done, just a large salt flat in the near future.
Sunrise behind El Capitan, Yosemite National Park, California.
Bears Ears National Monument, Utah. A vista used in so many westerns and a place whose beauty is impossible to capture other than with your own eyes.
Glacier National Park, Montana.
Barn Studies.
I’m drawn to old, abandoned barns. I don’t know why. To me, this one looked like an aging, retired pugilist, standing in the corner of a field as if it were its old boxing ring. Its sad, hollow eyes, its pug nose and its row of broken teeth staring out forlornly at any passerby.
A barn yearning to be a house of worship, dreaming of a religious decoration at the peak of its roof, a wide, welcoming entrance instead of a young tree on its face, and rows and rows of pews inside as it stands resolutely, staring up at the heavens.
Staring out at the empty fields, vacant-eyed and mouth agape, calling out over and over for the return of Bugg and happier days.
Exposed, its foundations crumbling, a staircase leading up into darkness. I wonder whose feet climbed and descended those stairs? What were they thinking about as they went about their day? Did they plan on leaving this barn behind?
